IVAN THE TERRIBLE \Ivan IV Vasilyevich\ (Russian: Ива́н Четвёртый, Васи́льевич (help·info), Ivan Chetvyorty, Vasilyevich), known in English as Ivan the Terrible (Ivan Grozny Russian: Ива́н Гро́зный (help·info)) ( 25 August 1530, Moscow – 28 March [O.S. 18 March] 1584,^[1] Moscow) was Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533. Vodka, like all classic spirits, has a long history, rooted in the 12th century Russia.
The word 'vodka' means "little water" in Russian. In 1474 a state monopoly for its production was intriduced by Ivan III.
A few centuries later Catherine the Great granted the right to distil spirit to the gentry, who turned vodka production into an art form.
The first luxury vodka, produced in aristocratic households, was of such a superb quality, that Catherine II did not hesitate to bestow gifts of vodka on European monarchs and intellectual luminaries. Vodka made for the masses, however, remained of dubious quality.
Therefore, in 1894 D.Mendeleev, a prominent Russian chemist, developed a perfect vodka formula, which became the benchmark in mass vodka production and ensured exceptionally high standards of the national spirit in the Soviet years. Luxury vodka also continued to be made after 1917, but its consumption was restricted to the party elite. It was not until the collapse of the Soviet Union, that the old Russian luxury vodka began to experience renaissance. A product of unrivalled heritage, quality and style, it remains the most sought-after vodka in the world.

IVAN THE TERRIBLE® vodka is inspired by Ivan IV ("the Terrible"), the most powerful of the Russian Tsars.

The word "Terrible" is an incorrect translation of his nickname "Grozny", meaning "Stern" or "Strict". Ivan, indeed, was terrible to his enemies, including aristocratic opposition and foreign invaders, most of whom he defeated successfully.

He united what was to become 21st century Russia. Ivan was highly intelligent, cultured and had an exquisite taste. He patronised the Muscovy Company, the first English plc, set up to trade with Russia in 1555, and was a big admirer of Elizabeth I.

The Tsar is also known as the world's first VODKA MAGNATE: he reinstated the monopoly for vodka production and opened the first vodka bars in the 16th century Moscow. His harsh governing methods guaranteed the high quality of the national spirit.
